Bus Shelters in Rio de Janeiro will Receive an Alert Button, Digital Clocks, and Thermal Sensation Sensors

The safety and comfort of Rio de Janeiro residents will be prioritized in the city’s future urban furniture. The Rio de Janeiro city government has launched a public tender for the concession of equipment in public areas that includes the installation of alert buttons, digital clocks with thermal sensation gauges, and informational screens displaying bus schedules at bus shelters and bus stop kiosks.

Twenty percent of the city’s bus shelters and kiosks will be equipped with alert buttons, speakers, and cameras connected to the control center of the concessionaire responsible for the modules. The goal is to ensure the safety of users, allowing them to trigger an alarm in case of emergencies such as assaults or medical emergencies. Images captured by the cameras will be stored for one month and may be used to identify and prosecute perpetrators of vandalism.

To expand the measurement points for thermal sensation across the city, 130 out of 432 digital clocks located on streets and squares will receive humidity meters and sensors for wind direction and speed. The collected data will be sent to the Rio Operations Center (COR), enabling the creation of a more accurate map of thermal sensation in the city.

Another enhancement for bus stops will be the installation of informational screens displaying the estimated arrival time of the next vehicle for each bus line. This measure, in partnership with the Municipal Department of Transportation, aims to facilitate trip planning for users and reduce waiting times.

The tender entails a total investment of R$ 650 million in modernizing the equipment and installing the new systems. The city will receive a minimum grant of R$ 644 million, half of which will be paid immediately and the rest over 16 years, with a grace period of four years before the start of repayment. Additionally, 5% of the gross revenue from advertising panels on the equipment will be allocated to the municipality, estimated at approximately R$ 317 million over the concession period.

The operation of the new equipment will commence immediately for advertising at Bike Rio stations and BRT stations and terminals. However, new operators for shelters and clocks will have to wait until the current contracts expire, which extend until December 2026.

The public tender for equipment concession in public areas represents a significant step towards modernizing Rio de Janeiro. These new measures aim to ensure user safety, improve comfort, and facilitate the lives of Rio residents who rely on public transportation.
